The Best Ways to Prevent a Fall at Home

Falls are a leading cause of serious injury for seniors in America. Often, these falls are the result of preventable causes. When it comes to preventing slips, trips, and falls in the home, the following is a fall prevention checklist that can help keep you standing on solid ground.

1. Clean up the Clutter

Clutter is a threat whether it is books that fall on the floor, garbage piled high by the bin, or clothes that need to be hung in the closet. Cleaning up clutter removes potential tripping hazards.

2. Install Non-Slip Mats in Bathrooms, Kitchens, and Garages

Installing non-slip mats on the kitchen and bathroom floor, garage, and within showers and tubs helps you maintain your footing even when water splashes on the floor.

3. Turn up the Lights

Installing higher wattage bulbs increases illumination around the home. Brighter lights eliminate dark spots inside and outside the home which significantly reduces the risk of a slip and fall accident.

4. Watch out for Medications

Medications can cause drowsiness and alter your equilibrium. Always read medications carefully and monitor yourself for signs that your balance or ability to walk are diminished.

5. Install Hand Rails

You should install hand rails on stairwells, steps, hallways, and shower stalls to prevent a slip and fall accident. Always make sure these are properly secured to the wall with screws and other anchors that are sufficient to hold your weight.

6. Look out for Loose Cords

Loose electrical cords and cables should be bundled and tucked under thick carpeting or raised and affixed to the wall. This helps prevent you from tripping over them as you walk through the room.

7. Take Care of Uneven Surfaces

It is imperative to repair broken masonry, loose decking, bunched carpeting, wobbly flagstones on walkways, and warped floors.

8. Buy New Shoes

Purchase shoes and slippers that have solid traction. Avoid wearing sandals, and toss out shoes and slippers whose treads have worn away.

9. Clean up Spills Immediately

Make sure to mop up floors and dry any standing puddles as soon as possible. The longer these lay around, the greater the risk of suffering a slip and fall accident.
